If you happen to be in the southeast metro city of Eagan on S. Robert Trail (Hwy. 3), there’s a small strip mall that you may be driving by and not even thinking twice about it. Trust me, it’s time for some mall shopping!
Trail Stop Tavern is located in a small strip mall on Eagan’s east side. There have been a couple different bar restaurants in this location over the last few years. I’m hoping the revolving door stops once and for all. As far as burgers go, I think they’ve got something here. The burgers are a half pound of Angus beef, with the one exception being The Butcher’s Burger. They say this burger’s beef is a custom grind from the University of Minnesota’s Dept. of Meat Science, which includes pork belly in the blend. I can’t say that I’ve ever heard of the U of M having a Dept. of Meat Science, but I have confirmed this is a real Dept., and they do make this special grind of different cuts of beef with pork belly added, just for Trail Stop Tavern. Not that I ever doubted them.
They cook your beef to temp. Mine was pink, juicy and seasoned pretty well. Nicely melted, smoked Gouda cheese was a nice change for me. Crispy fried onions strings topped that. Underneath the patty are perfectly cooked, caramelized onions. They had my kind of texture to them. With that are some delicious bacon lardons spread across the bottom bun. Small strips of fatty bacon, lardons are a great alternative to the regular two large strips of bacon placed on top of the patty. Bacon with every bite is what I like to say. The bun, soft and lightly toasted was great.
Burger Night is Wednesday night. There are also some sweet specials every day of the week. So the next time you hop on S. Robert Trail, makes sure your trip stops here, at Trail Stop Tavern. I will be back for more burgers and to try other menu items.
Wildcat Fries- I upgraded from fresh cut fries since they sounded pretty cool. Glad I did. They were fantastic!
