I’ve had a few good burgers up and down the St. Croix River, including places in Stillwater, Bayport, Taylors Falls and Hudson. I’ve got a new place that you’re going to want to get to by car, bike or even boat, but only if you like 5 star burgers!
Are you looking for something different from the trendy, thin patty, double cheeseburger with American cheese? Chef Mike has taken a 180 degree turn from that with his cheese, beef and especially with his cooking process.
The beef is a 1/2 pound blend of chuck and brisket. Chef seasons the beef and places it on a hot cast iron skillet in a 650 degree wood-fired oven. It’s cooked perfectly to temp. My favorite way to cook a burger is in a cast iron skillet. If you are like me, you’ve never had Double Gloucester cheese on a burger before, and probably never even heard of it. It has a creamy, milky, rich, nutty, yet mellow flavor, and a firm, but smooth texture. The cheese has bits of onion and chives in it and is fantastic! It’s a firmer cheese, but Chef gets it melted nicely in that 650 degree oven. There is also a slice of provolone cheese on the patty as well.
The cheese is topped with caramelized onions, but these are not mushy at all as a lot of caramelized onions can be. It’s finished with a delicious whole grain, thyme honey mustard sauce. It oozes out from under the patty. The perfect finish to this burger is the Franklin Street Bakery bun. It’s one of my favorites in the Twin Cities Area. This is the gourmet burger you are looking for. A burger like this is not a secondary menu item. I’d give it top billing!
Chef Mike and his wife Nicole opened up Manger just a couple of months ago. If the rest of the menu is as good as their 5 star Manger Burger and their 5 star Fries, then they’ve got something really special for us to enjoy. As Chris Hawkey from KFAN radio sings in the song, North Country, “St. Croix River here I come”!
Thank you, Tammy, for the great service!
French Fries – Fantastic!
