I was fortunate enough to have Burger Donkey review Gordy’s back on June 17th. Recently, I had a chance to visit it myself. Here are my thoughts:
Cloquet, Minnesota is known for two things. High School hockey and Gordy’s Hi-Hat. The locals have known about Gordy’s magic ever since they opened in 1960, but after a visit from Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives in 2010, the whole Country knows about Gordy’s.
It’s been a long 7 years since I saw the DDD episode on Gordy’s Hi-Hat. The wait is finally over and I can tell you it won’t be another 7 years! .
I can honestly say that this is the best Diner/Drive-in burger I have ever had! I can list all of the individual components to this burger, but the one thing that stood out was how all of them worked in unison to deliver a great burger experience.
Two, fresh, hand pressed ground beef patties, grilled beautifully on a flattop and very juicy. Two slices of American cheese, melted perfectly. Two strips of bacon, a lot of thin sliced pickles and delicious, lightly fried, diced onions. A simple, soft diner bun is all you want to hold in your hands.
A couple of things stood out for me. After the first bite, I immediately could taste the diced fried onions and the great tasting, but lightly spread mayo. The juiciness of the burger patties was the next thing. I had them make it the way they normally make it, including a little ketchup and mustard as well. This is where I will mention again how every component worked together to make this burger experience a great one. One way for me to tell how good a burger is, after I’ve finished it, do I immediately want another one? An emphatic, Yes!
My recommendation is to get a double burger. That second patty puts the meat to bun ratio right in my wheelhouse. Gordy’s is a fun experience and it’s a great Diner/Drive-in burger! They open up in the spring and close in the fall, so if you are heading up to the lake or Duluth, etc., make this a burger destination!
French Fries – lightly battered and delicious!
Onion Rings – Good.
